It doesn't. It will do 480p. Thought it is rumoured that hardware can handle HD resolutions (720p, 1080i) due to the ATI chipset inside. I've got Mario Kart Double Dash for the system and it does look a bit better than it did on the GameCube, but because Nintendo game devs use the same tools for developing GC games as they do Wii games, maybe the HD tools aren't ready yet?

So far, the gameplay, due to the unique Wii controllers, is superior to any game console I've played. They've done the best job in this respect, even though it lacks true HD quality graphics. It's not bad now that the cables are here though. It's definitely a 100% improvement over the composite cables on my HDTV.

I thought the Nintendo Wii doesn't handle HD like the Xbox 360 and PS3 do.

I wonder why Nintendo when with a lower screen quality than the other consoles, I guess it does save the end user a bit of money right? Or is it because it is backwards compatible with the GameCube and their games were not HD either?

Tell me!
