Using Transit in Hong Kong? Remember this Song!

My trip to Asia is coming up and I can’t wait to go! First COMPUTEX in Taipei and then Hong Kong! When I was in Hong Kong last year, I learned how to use the mass transit system known as the MTR. It took me a good day and a half of fumbling with a map and running around in circles around one station to figure it out, but I did manage to get the hang of it before I left.
The Hong Kong MTR is probably one of the best kept subways that I’ve ever ridden. It’s clean, it’s not really that crowded most of the time from what I experienced, and it gets you to where you need to go pretty fast. It puts the local Skytrain in Vancouver to shame. Everything is pretty much automated and it doesn’t reek of urine or homeless guy that snuck onboard.
I came across this video a little while ago that takes you through the MTR system in around 2 minutes. It’s set to some Disney Song that I can’t remember the name of at the moment. I wish I had heard and memorized this song before I went last year.
Although this seems to work just right for the Hong Kong MTR, I can imagine that it would start to become pretty annoying if you had to repeat that enough times for the number of stops on some of the larger subway systems. I just hope that I don’t start humming it while I’m on the train ![]()

Yeah well, the Chinese are pretty good at hiding or eliminating all the homeless. In Vancouver, the homeless have more rights and advocates than those of us that work our asses off to live paycheck to paycheck.
Nice video…as for that song, it’s based on the Do-Re-Mi song…Google shows it’s by Dame Julie Andrews.
I also love the MTR in HK. It’s always so cool and clean like you mentioned. I only wished the subway in Seoul would turn on the air conditioning all the time. During the winter, especially during rush hour, when the subway cars are filled to the brim, there is NO circulation whatsoever of fresh air. GROSS!!
I can imagine! I know that when I’ve had a little too much Kimchi, I tend to get a little…umm…gassy…
I love the MTR! Yeah, the song was from Sound of Music!
I’ve actually never seen that movie. MTR does rock!
