Huge news in the mobile industry today. Corporate smartphone juggernaut, Research in Motion has taken the bow off their plan to acquire Palm Inc, makers of the highly anticipated Palm Pre that is due to launch later this year. This announcement makes Apple’s iPhone announcements sound like lunch room banter. Here’s a clip from this worldwide exclusive announcement posted on Futurelooks:

“It has just been announced that Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry line of devices, is in the process of acquiring Palm, Inc. This news comes mere months before the pending release of the Palm Pre, a smartphone that is supposed infuse new energy and excitement into the Palm brand. Research in Motion wants to capitalize on this excitement and extend it to the BlackBerry line as a whole.”

With the power and security of the BlackBerry Platform and the beautiful OS of the new Palm Pre, the new PalmBerry handsets will have people saying “iPhone Who?”

Are they trying to standardize the world of smartphones to try and take over the iphones grip on the market?

iPhone has no real grip as of yet. Their numbers are comparatively small when you look at the actual facts. However, Apple does have some great spinsters that come up with campaigns that appeal to a lot of people that may not be privy to the facts (or who don’t bother checking them).

I think the iPhone was a wake up call that the industry needed. It’s definitely the smallest peacock with the biggest set of feathers at the moment.

Blackberry? We pick ‘em off of the vines out along the fence and make jam out of them…. Oh, That kind of blackberry! Nah! My cell phone doesn’t have a camera and doesn’t text message, My dog doesn’t have a Pedigree, and I drive an old Chevy pick up. I had one of the origional Motorola Cellular phones ’till alltel said it wouldn’t work with their equiptment anymore! When I was in College we were still using slide rules and I’m easing into this world of IPODS, Bluetooths (Blueteeth?) and Blackberries rather reluctantly. I can remember vaccum tubes and the first simple transister amplifier I ever built. My Dad was a Ham Radio Operator and many a night I sat next to him when he worked DX 1200 miles away on six meters, (which is still a feat today!)Yeah, I know I’m an old fart! Everybody becomes one evertually! My scooter (Yammy C3 ) and I are riding in a friend’s van to Toronto in July and I’m going to ride back to south Alabama on it(out through the Ft. Erie/Buffalo Port of Entry.) I’ll keep you posted. Cheers! Gabe

We’ll see about that. I mean, sure it has tons of potential, but it never stopped anybody from ruining a perfectly good project ;) I sincerely hope however that this will work and we’ll get another device that will be superior to the not so bad, but over advertised Iphone.

This is a good move by Blackberry. I don’t know anyone in biz who wants an Iphone. The only real business competitor to Blackberry right now is the Palm. It seems like Blackberry bought out the last bit of serious competition.

April fools! Sorry! :)

However, we weren’t totally off the mark with this article. Apparently, much of the things in the joke were based on facts and some speculation and so far, the U2 influence on product development is true. We may very well see a “RedBerry” by U2 soon. It also seems that RIM may very well be a bridge for Palm in case the Pre doesn’t become the blockbuster it is capable of.
