Upgrading the Macbook Pro from 2GB to 4GB…

Now that I’ve had a good couple of days on my New (Refurbished) 2.5GHz Penryn Macbook Pro, it’s pretty clear that the 2GB of RAM onboard is no match for the beating that I’ve been dishing out. With VMWare running in the background and all sorts of things open in one of the several “spaces” that I’ve setup, I’ve been swapping pretty badly to the slow notebook hard drive. An immediate upgrade to 4GB’s was in order.

So I went down to my favourite computer store, NCIX and picked out a 4GB DDR2 667MHz Kit made by OCZ Technology to do the upgrade with. Want to know how it’s done? Check out my DIY video of the upgrade process…

Although this upgrade is very easy, if you’re clumsy like Ed and tend to spill things on people, you might not want to try this at home. I’m sure one of those Mac Geniuses could help you out and charge you a lot in the process.

If this still isn’t enough, the next step is to investigate an 8GB upgrade. Though some people have reported varying degrees of success with 4GB modules out there, a 6GB upgrade is actually reported as a success. I’ll keep you folks posted on that as I know that many users would probably want to know which modules will do the trick without flaking out. Stay tuned!

My New MacBook Pro Arrives!

After lots of humming and hawwing, I decided to throw down on a Brand New (Refurbished) MacBook Pro 2.5GHz Penryn. Although I’m a pretty hardcore PC guy building computers at a blistering pace, I’m a pretty big fan of the Apple OSX operating system. Using my skills as a PC guy, I was able to fabricate my own Hackint0sh using a bunch of surplus parts from my collection. I’ve been using that machine since May of this year without any problems as my main system in the office, but I really missed having use of it on the road. I even turned my ASUS U1F into a Hackb00k for a while, running the OSX off a USB hard drive. You can see it in action during this Dot Com Pho Episode.

This machine is definitely a lot bigger than I’m normally used to. The U1F is so much smaller than this 15.4 Inch machine. One of the things that I was most impressed with (besides the super fast shipping) was that this machine, while being labelled refurbished, was physically brand new. Except for the sticker under the battery, there was absolutely nothing that distinguished this machine from new. I’ve made a video of the unboxing of this machine for your enjoyment…

This machine definitely needs a 2GB to 4GB upgrade. I’ll be posting a video of the upgrade process a little later on once VIMEO gives my account it’s new 500MB weekly allotment. Stay tuned.
