My One Year Retirement Anniversary

- I came close to hitting Dot Com Mogul Status in July of last year. I only missed being Number One on Google. However, this January I made it and if all goes well, I’ll be making it a couple of more times again this year. I’m even on WikiPedia now.
- Unlike my old job, working on my business full time has allowed me opportunities to travel. For the first time in over 16 years, I got the opportunity to travel to Asia. Going to COMPUTEX was such a great experience for me to get out of North America. This segways(sp?) into my next cool thing…
- As a “Retiree” I’ve been able to take time to improve myself. One of the things that I’ve done is take Mandarin Lessons which should make life in Taiwan for the upcoming COMPUTEX even more successful. I’ve also taken steps to improve my writing through courses and to increase my booksmarts by actually reading books. This is something that I haven’t done since College and now I always have something that I’m working on.
The last year has gone by quickly and for this next year, I really have to learn to pace myself better. I’ve been pushing hard to maximize my revenue opportunities and build up my web properties and I’m happy that I was able to catch myself before totally going over the edge.
Last year, I only had Futurelooks to worry about. This year, I have my growing blog, MegaTechNews and LaptopLifestyle to worry about. I can’t wait to get back into it, but I’m going to stick to the slower pace until my head is ready to get back into it. I’m also fighting off an annoying cold so I have no choice but to take it easy and have some fun.

Don’t forget working on that 300 Spartan body with our Crossfit workouts
Right! Working on 6 pack of abs, not 6 pack of donuts :p
You need to read The 4-Hour Workweek. True retirement doesn’t cause burn out.
I should have burnt out long ago. I was working a full time job AND running my site. When I quit the full time job, even though physically, I wasn’t working anymore, my mind started to focus solely on the business. They don’t teach you to think in retail ya know so it has been a long transition.
Hi Stephen,
I’m on the Technorati Fave Train too.
I fave you, fave me too, will you.
Thanks.
I’m not on the train yet, though I will be today in my next post. However, commenting off topic is a little out of form to get someome to fave you back, IMHO.
Hmm you are retired and is still busy busy and busy…???
i wish i could ‘retire’ as young as you
yeah more parties man!
Yes, I’ve never been to so many parties in my life
Free food, drinks and schwag. Yes, i can get used to this “retirement”
Isn’t retiring not working at all?
Is maintaining this blog, Futurelooks and your other 2 sites considered work and you run it under a business?
That to me isn’t retirement, to me that’s just a career change
You’re no longer in retail, just like I am no longer in retail.
Though laying down with a laptop while I type this is pretty fun. Too bad my work won’t let me do this permanently.
Well, there are other things. For starters, I can take off and not do anything at all for a day. I can even have multiple lunch breaks. In fact, I can walk away and not even come back
This is in addition to being able to sit on my couch and use my laptop all day if I don’t want to sit at my desk
While people can retire and live on their retirement funds, many of them decide to grab part time jobs or try other hobbies. Some of them stare at their funds all day to make sure they have enough money to make it till they die. It’s also known that doing nothing after retirement is death for most people. When their usefulness has disappeared, they disappear too.
For me, what I’m doing is retirement to me. I’ve been used to doing physical work, following procedures, and having a boss. Now I use my brain, which is a totally undeveloped muscle because you don’t get to think when you have a job. You just do and get a pay check.
To develop that “muscle” I’ve started to teach it new things, let it see new things, go to new places. The burn out I felt was totally mental. It showed me how little having a job really made me reach. My livelihood is based on my ability to put it together in my head, even though my body might be sipping Corona’s in front of a slot machine. This is what I’m not actually used to, and this is what totally burned me out.
I just need some time to not think at all, which I find hard to do at times. I’m sort of like a firecracker. Once my fuse is lit, I tend to go till I blow. This is what I need to work on. To turn myself from a firecracker into a candle. Profound, I know
Looks like you are almost to your two year anniversary. Congrats on that (early)
I too am “retired” and I can agree with most of what you’ve said in this post. Ah yes, I’m working on the 6 pack of abs, and I would say the most important think is not eating the donuts
Situps are a waste of time!
