Getting TOO Greedy with Google…

So you would think that if you littered your site with Google ads, it would produce higher income. Well, we did a quick experiment over the weekend, and it appears that it isn’t true.
You see, when you put TOO many google ads on your site, they tend to canibalize each other. For example, when we added an ad to the left side and bottom of the site, it killed our top performer, the big box that sat at the top of our articles. The ad was running fairly bare because the links were being pulled into the other ads. Because the other ads had taken away the links, our top performer tanked, but at the same time, because the other placements weren’t optimum, they were not able to make up the difference left over from an underperforming top performer.
So the key is to find ways to increase the performance of your top performers in both click through rate and effective CPM by not introducing creatives that canibalize your other ads. Simply tossing a bunch of ads onto your site and hoping that someone clicks is not the way to go. Concentrate on your top performers and tweak them to perfection and ensure that the ads aren’t competing. In fact, I actually removed a few more ads and watched the numbers fly on my top performers. This in addition to the magical tweak of bringing your ads to the left of the site ended up being my tweak of the week.
