Even Superman Rides A Bike…

So I was over at BSP Bikes picking up my bike when someone walked into the shop and looked eerily familiar. Even being a fan of the show Smallville, I still didn’t recognize him because he was so incognito in a ball cap, shorts and a T-Shirt. No Blue and Red colours today I guess. Well, if you haven’t figured it out, it was none other than Tom Welling who plays young Kal-El/Superman on the show.

Mr. Welling was checking out a new Gyro helmet and some brand new riding shorts. He of course picked the top of the line Gyro like the one being used by Team Discovery this year, but he had a bit of buyers remorse when it came to the shorts: A $180 pair of shorts that used coconut husks so they don’t stink if you forget to wash them, and they had this wicked chamois that should get even a mere mortal through 21 stages of the tour, albeit very slowly. After a bit of encouragement, he decided his ass was worth it and sprang the green stuff (no, not the Kryptonite. That would kill him. LOL.). When a celeb still thinks about his purchases, at least you know he’s still on earth. I did think it was kinda funny when he was checking out the Kryptonite locks on the wall.

Our young Superman seems to be a Specialized fan, owning a Specialized Tarmac and a Hard Rock as his weapons of choice for road and off road. The shop manager wanted to get him into a Trek or Cannondale since they sold both brands, but I politely pointed out that he is Superman, and the “S” in Specialized works for him. Otherwise he’d be a “Tuperman” with the Trek or a “Cuperman” on the Cannondale.

We kind of exchanged nods, and went back to our shopping. Overall, if you watch the show, his mannerisms are pretty much the same in real life. Though he did sport an even lower profile when in the store to not draw any attention, he’s still quiet and reserved Clark Kent. Even stars need a break, and even though I’m a fan, I didn’t run up and bear hug him.

It would have been more dramatic if I tackled him to get him away from the “Kryptonite”
