All Those Mandarin Lessons…

Afte taking Mandarin Lessons for the last little while now, I’m not sure I could even negotiate my way out of a Chinese MacDonalds. I felt even worse when I saw this video of a Brutha belting out an old Mandarin Folk Song. This is not an April Fools Joke. Brutha can sing in Mandarin!

I don’t know who is this Brutha guy is and I hope he knew the meaning of the song. The first part was ok for me since it praised their hometown, but the second part they start to point out who this never set raising sun in the praire ( I think they mean the praire in norther China) was. They were praising the communist party and chairman Mao. I love the lyric but don’t like the last part. :-) BTW, the title is about the raising sun in the praire that never set (never down?).

A brutha is a term often used to describe an african male whom you have respect for. Derived from “brother” ;)

i actually saw this show a while ago with my parents. There is a program in China that invites people from around the world to learn about Chinese culture and language. At the end of the program the participants had to do a performance or skit. The host is a white dude that speaks, reads and writes Mandarin Chinese fluently. If you just heard him without seeing him, you’d think he was a well educated Chinese native. Puts me to shame :(

But then again, Chinese people I meet are very amazed at my grasp of the English language and the fact that I can still speak Mandarin (albeit with an accent).

Mandarin is a language. It’s the national language of China, not just an orange ;)

Oh my God! I really have to brush up my mandarin as well, we’re practically in the same boat. :)
